How To Make Zobo Drink in 5 Steps!

By 12/20/2015 , , ,

Zobo is a refreshing drink with a natural tangy tasting flavour; that is made by boiling the dried sepal of the hibiscus flower. It has an intense herbal tasting flavour that diminishes when infused with other fresh fruits that have their own natural sweetness. Fruits like pineapples and watermelons go well with this drink because they serve as natural flavours and the result is always so amazing! The first time I had this drink I was in Zaria, Kaduna state and I have been hooked ever since, what drink could be more perfect in this harmathan weather!

Zobo drink or hibiscus flower tea as it is sometimes called, can be drank hot or cold. I like it very cold with chopped pineapples and cucumber slices, no matter how you like to have yours, the upside is that it is a healthy alternative to the fizzy sodas with artificial sweeteners which are very harmful to our health.

According to a journal of Ethnopharmacology(May 2008), Hibiscus tea (zobo drink) improves the kidneys ability to filter waste products; like uric and oxalic acids which forms kidney stones if allowed to accumulate at high levels. Zobo drink is also rich in antioxidants and vitamin C and it greatly aids weight loss for people who are on a diet!

So what are you waiting for? Let’s make zobo drink in 5 easy steps!

                                                                                    Ingredients

1) Zobo/ Hibiscus flower 1 cup

2) 1 small pineapple

3) sugar 30g

Directions

1) Wash the zobo /Hibiscus flower to get rid of the dust, then peel the pineapple and chop some into cubes and set aside

2) Add the zobo/hibiscus flower and the pineapple peels into a clean pot, pour in 4 cups of water and boil for 5 minutes.

Cooks tip:The pineapple peels serve as a natural flavour and sweetener in this drink you can also add in some of the pineapple cubes while boiling. you will find the extract a deep maroon in colour, Now that is the zobo drink you want!

3) Once it is boiled, sieve out the zobo/hibiscus flower and pineapples and toss it away, then allow the zobo extract to cool for about an hour or until totally cooled

4) while cooling add in the sugar and sliced cucumbers at this point so it infuses its own refreshing taste into the drink

5) Then please by all means! Serve on the rocks with chopped pineapples and cucumber slices.

there you have it, your very quick and very easy zobo drink recipe. you can serve at Christmas or any time at all.
